Cobh host Longford as injury woes finally ease

Cobh Ramblers welcome Longford Town to St Colman’s Park on Saturday night, looking to build on last week’s win over Wexford.

It’s also a first visit to the great island as a manager for former Cork City and Tottenham Hotspurs star Neale Fenn, following his appointment at the end of June.

Ramblers remain nine points behind leaders Waterford with just six games left to play, however Ramblers boss Stephen Henderson says that can’t be their focus for the rest of the season.

“If we keep focussing on Waterford that gap will look bigger”, Henderson told CobhRamblers.ie. “We’re just going to focus on ourselves, and try and win as many games as we can, starting with Longford this weekend. The win over Wexford was one down, now six to go, starting with Longford. It’s another huge cup final for us, and we’ll see how that goes.”

Henderson was full of praise for Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh, after the young striker scored his first senior goal for the club against Wexford last week.

“He’s been brilliant. That goal last week was his seventh goal in four games for the club between senior and our other sides, and it was great to see him score. And young Cian Leonard as well has stepped up, and he’s done fantastically well up front, in a position that we’re struggling in as all our forwards are injured or have left. So the two kids have come in and they’ve done brilliantly. As has our new signing Kevin Taylor at left back, he’s been great since we’ve had him in.”

Henderson has signed a three year extension with Ramblers keeping him at St Colman’s Park until 2020, as has assistant manager Stuart Ashton. And club chairman Bob Donovan is delighted the pair have committed their futures to Ramblers.
“We’re absolutely delighted Stephen and Stuart have decided to extend their time at Cobh Ramblers,” said Donovan. “To sign a three year deal shows a huge belief in the project here at Ramblers, and I have no doubt Stephen and Stuart will continue and improve their already impressive work at the club.

“On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to thank them for all their hard work, and I’m very excited to see where they can bring Ramblers in the future. This news puts Ramblers on a very strong footing moving forward.”

On the injury front Ben O’Riordan misses out, while Ian Mylod and captain Christopher McCarthy are doubts but should be fit for action.
