Preview: Ramblers v Longford Town

longfordpreviewRamblers are due to play Longford Town this Saturday at 7:45pm. The Rams have 4 points from their opening three fixtures. They currently sit in 5th position in the league. They gained a well-earned point after last Saturday’s 1-1 draw up in Athlone.  Conor Meade scored from the spot early on and he now has four for the season. It was a fair result as both sides deserved something from the game.  Dave Hill’s side will hope to get all three points at St. Colman’s Park and continue their unbeaten start at home.

Ramblers’ net-minder Robert Birdsall believes that 3 points this weekend could be very important, “3 points on Saturday at home to Longford would be massive for us. It would also put our mark down as serious contenders because realistically Longford are favourites to go up this season. The team is starting to come together now and we believe that no team in the league is better than us. We will be going into this game looking for all 3 points”.

Longford sit in 3rd place in the First Division on 6 points having beaten Salthill and Waterford in the opening two rounds of fixtures. They lost last time out away to Finn Harps and manager Tony Cousins will want to get back on track this weekend. They are many people’s tip for the title this year and with ex-Manchester United, Newcastle ad Northern Ireland star Keith Gillespie in their ranks, they will not be an easy side to beat this season. Longford were defeated by Waterford United in last season’s play-offs and will want to improve on that this year.
