Welcome Back: Matthew Whelan Returns to Cobh Ramblers for the remainder of the season
Cobh Ramblers FC is delighted to announce the return of striker Matthew Whelan for the remainder of the 2025 season.
A Ballincollig native, Matthew previously impressed at St. Colman’s Park with his goalscoring instinct and work rate. Since then, he’s made a name for himself in the United States with a standout collegiate career at Davenport University.
During his time in the U.S., Whelan earned multiple individual honours, including:
D2CCA Second Team All-American
First Team All-GLIAC (twice)
⚽ 16 goals and 3 assists in 2022, earning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week three times
⚽ 10 goals and 5 assists in 2021, including 6 game-winners—ranking 3rd in NCAA Division II for game-winning goals
Over 50 career goals at college level, consistently among the top attacking talents in his conference
Now back home, Matthew brings valuable experience and proven quality to the squad as we push forward this season.

Cobh Ramblers Football Club is an Irish football club. The club, founded in 1922 and elected to the League of Ireland in 1985, hails from Cobh, County Cork and play their home matches at St. Colman's Park. The club's colours are claret and blue.
