For the first time this season, our play-off hopes are now in our own hands. UCD play Drogheda on the final day meaning whatever happens, a Cobh win away to Athlone will put us into the play-offs.

There were two enforced changes from the side that defeated Limerick. Anthony O’Donnell replaced the suspended Ian Mylod with Stephen Christopher coming in for the injured Ben O’Riordan.

With no great chances early on, Eoin McGreevy opened the scoring late in the first half with a deflected header that he didn’t know too much about but he wasn’t complaining! Cobh headed in a goal up at the break but the tie was still firmly in the balance. A superb finish from Shane O’Connor after Lehane’s terrific run made it 2-0 four minutes into the second half. The win was sealed with ten minutes to go as substitute Matthew Whelan popped up with a stunning header into the top corner to grab his first senior goal, following O’Donnell’s perfect cross.  The u19 striker was instantly a fans’ favourite on what was his home debut.

Cobh Ramblers Starting XI: Hunt, Fleming, Mulcahy, C McCarthy, O’Donnell, Comerford, Donnelan (Murphy 84), Christopher, McGreevy (Whelan 72), O’Connor, Lehane (Ellis 65).

Substitutes: Creamer, McSweeney, Kingston
