Cobh Ramblers Congratulate Cobh Wanderers on Official Opening of Old Church Park Grass Pitch

Cobh Ramblers are delighted to celebrate a major milestone for football in Cobh this Saturday, February 1st, with the official opening of Cobh Wanderers grass pitch at Old Church Park. To mark the occasion, Cobh Ramblers will take on Cobh Wanderers, official opening 2.30 followed by the game kicking off at 3:00 PM.

This event is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of the Cobh4Football initiative, which originally set out to upgrade facilities on the Island for All 4 clubs. The project was made possible through the provision of lands by Cobh Wanderers, who have played a key role in creating a high-quality community facility for all four football clubs in the town. We extend our congratulations to Frank McCall and the Cobh Wanderers committee for their tireless efforts in seeing this project through. It is fantastic to see them return to having their own grass pitch at Old Church Park. Along with the additon of the Stephen Ireland Astro Turf.

A Community Celebration

Saturday’s event is open to the public, with free admission. However, a collection will be held at the gate, with all proceeds going toward repairing the facility following recent storm damage.

Bill O’Leary, Chairman of Cobh Ramblers, expressed his enthusiasm for the continued progress of football infrastructure in the town, stating: “We in Cobh Ramblers are delighted with the development of the football infrastructure at all levels in Cobh. This facility is a key component of the local provision for all ages. The future is looking bright, and let’s continue to collaborate for the benefit of all our boys and girls who love football.”

Cobh Wanderers Chairman Frank McCall highlighted the years of hard work behind the project: “After years of hard work by so many volunteers, we are honoured to officially open the grass pitch at Old Church Park. This is another step in further developing football in Cobh. A special mention to Stephen Ireland, whose talent allowed us to develop the facility to what it is today. Well done to all who have contributed along the way, and to all past and present Wanderers’ committees for elevating the club to a high standard both on and off the field.”

Stephen Ireland Astro Turf and Cobh4Football Initiative

The new grass pitch is just one part of the broader efforts to enhance football facilities in the area. The Cobh4Football initiative continues to promote unity among the town’s football clubs, striving to improve facilities, coaching, and opportunities for young players. The upgrading of Old Church Park was a key element of this initiative, reinforcing the town’s commitment to developing football at all levels.

Additionally, the Stephen Ireland Astro Turf, named in honour of the former Cobh native, has been a crucial addition to the town’s football infrastructure. This facility provides all-weather playing surfaces, ensuring year-round training and development opportunities for local players.

Cobh Ramblers are proud to support this exciting new chapter for Cobh Wanderers. We look forward to an exciting match on Saturday and to many years of shared success at Old Church Park for all 4 clubs in the town.
