Preview – Ramblers host Galway

Second place Galway visit St Colman’s Park on Friday night in the latest round of First Division action. The visitors are in impressive form and four wins on the bounce has them second in the table, three points behind leaders Cork City. Ramblers enter the game on the back of last week’s 1-1 draw at Bray Wanderers, where Conor Drinan grabbed his fourth goal in four games.

The Rams remain without John Kavanagh, Dale Holland and Danny O’Connell through injury while Issa Kargbo is also a doubt.

There are two members of the Galway side who need no introduction for Cobh fans. Midfielder David Hurley (below) made 82 Ramblers appearances between 2017 and 2020 while centre back Charlie Lyons featured 66 times for the Rams from 2019 to 2021. Both now ply their trade with the Connacht side but will be in familiar surroundings at St Colman’s Park

Galway won 1-0 when the teams met earlier this season at Eamonn Deacy Park. The Tribesmen won all three of these fixtures last year meaning Ramblers’ last victory over Galway was in September 2020.

Manager Darren Murphy spoke earlier this week about the tie,

“We are starting to score and lads can see what they are capable of. We’re pressing teams better and the last few weeks have been great to watch. The club is in a good place with lots of talented players coming through. Results haven’t been where we want them to be but it’s still early in the season. We want to pick up more wins and keep moving upwards.

Galway are strong, organised with lots of good players. Away from home we should have taken points against them. Teams coming down here know they’ll get a tough game and we’re ready to go. We’re looking forward to it.”

Midfielder Pierce Phillips also gave his thoughts on the game ahead,

“Performance wise we’ve been good, it’s just the fine margins. Drinan and Beineón are getting in there and scoring more now. I think it will come. Cobh is our home and we need to make it harder for teams coming down here. We’re focusing on ourselves and picking up points to move up the table.”

Kick-off on Friday night is at 19:45
