Davin O’Neill Returns to Cobh Ramblers as Player Development Coach

Cobh, Co. Cork – Cobh Ramblers FC is proud to announce the appointment of former player and local football icon Davin O’Neill as the club’s new Player Development Coach.

O’Neill, who boasts a decorated playing career with Cobh Ramblers, Cork City, and Cobh Wanderers, returns to St. Colman’s Park to play a key role in nurturing the next generation of Ramblers talent. His appointment reflects the club’s commitment to both developing young players and reinforcing strong ties with the local community.

Distinguished Playing Career

A fan favourite during his time at Cobh Ramblers, O’Neill made over 100 league appearances from 2005 to 2009, playing a crucial role in the club’s most successful period. Notably, he was instrumental in Cobh Ramblers’ historic 2007 League of Ireland First Division title win, contributing 14 goals as the team went on a record-breaking 27-match unbeaten run and secured promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in its history.

Following his time at Cobh Ramblers, O’Neill continued his success at Cork City, where his leadership and technical ability helped the club achieve strong league performances, including winning the League of Ireland First Division in 2011. He later played a key role with Cobh Wanderers, where his experience further strengthened the team’s standing within the Munster Senior League.

Transition to Coaching

After retiring from playing, O’Neill transitioned seamlessly into coaching. As manager of Springfield Ramblers, he led the club’s youth sides to multiple trophies, underlining his ability to develop young talent and instil a winning mentality. His coaching career also saw him progress to the managerial setup at Cobh Wanderers’ first team, contributing to their growth and success within the Munster Senior League.

New Role at Cobh Ramblers

In his new role as Player Development Coach, O’Neill will work closely with the club’s senior academy teams, providing tailored development plans, mentorship, and ensuring a smooth transition for academy players aiming to step up to senior football. His experience as both a player and coach align perfectly with the club’s objectives of developing talent and building a sustainable future.

This appointment also coincides with an exciting new era at Cobh Ramblers, as the club is now under the ownership of FC32, a multi-club football group whose portfolio includes Spezia Calcio (Italy) and SKN St. Pölten (Austria). FC32’s philosophy is rooted in fostering young talent, establishing strong pathways to professional football, and integrating cutting-edge coaching methodologies—making O’Neill’s role integral to the club’s vision.

Community Focus

O’Neill’s return reinforces the club’s strong connection to the local community. Having spent much of his career in Cobh and Cork, both as a player and coach, he embodies the values of dedication, leadership, and community spirit that are central to Cobh Ramblers FC.

Speaking on his appointment, O’Neill said:

“Cobh Ramblers has always held a special place in my heart. I’m thrilled to return in a role that allows me to shape young players’ journeys and contribute to the long-term success of the club. It’s not just about football; it’s about supporting the community, giving local talent the best chance to thrive, and building something sustainable for the future.”

Speaking on Davin’s appointment, Richie Holland, overall Head of Development at Cobh Ramblers had this to say:

“I am delighted that Davin has returned to the club. His experience and knowledge will be invaluable to our young players in the academy. Davin has an incredible history with Cobh Ramblers FC, and I know he will install the club’s values into the players.”
