PREVIEW: FAI CUP 2ND ROUND: Killester United v Cobh Ramblers

KILLESTERVRAMBLERS600

Cobh Ramblers head to Dublin this weekend in the midst of somewhat of an injury crisis, as they face Intermediate side Killester United in the Second Round of the FAI Irish Daily Mail Senior Cup at Hadden Park.

Stephen Henderson’s side come into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw away to League of Ireland newcomers Cabinteely. Centre back Brendeán Frahill headed home a last minute equaliser for Cobh that night in a game that also saw 17 year old Adam O’Sullivan score his first ever senior goal.

On the injury front, Darren Murphy Senior and Peter White remain some distance away from reaching full fitness, as does Andrew Bhandarkar who is sidelined with a knee problem. Young striker Jonathan Creamer recently tore his cruciate and could be out for up to 6 months. Goalkeeper David Browne remains injured with an ankle ligament problem whilst Steven McCarthy (knee) and Audie Dunlea (groin) were late withdrawals from the squad this week. Our other goalkeeper Stephen Hickey picked up a knock in training this week and is only fit enough to make the bench, meaning that u19 goalkeeper Eoghan Daly will make his senior debut at the weekend. The former Avondale and College Corinthians ‘keeper had a superb season for our u19s last year, picking up the Players’ Player of the Year award and was amongst the replacements in the Cabinteely game. Graham McCarthy is another absentee as he serves a one game suspension.

There are also doubts over the fitness of Rob Waters (Achilles), Chris McCarthy (Knee Ligaments) and Ryan Goldsmith (hamstring) which means that the Ramblers squad truly is stretched to the limit for the trip to the Capital.

Our FAI Cup campaign in 2014 ended at this stage as Premier Division Derry City recorded a 2-0 win over a battling Ramblers side at St Colman’s Park in the second round. 2013 saw our last bout against non-league competition in the prestigious tournament, beating St Patrick’s CY in Round 2.

Our opponents on Saturday overcame Dunboyne 3-0 in the First Round of the competition and are currently fourth in the LSL Senior Division Sunday as they come to the conclusion of their league season.

Kick-off in Hadden Park, Killester is at 2.30pm on Saturday.
