Ethan McCarthy to take up coaching role in the United States

Cobh Ramblers u19 manager Ethan McCarthy is to leave the club in the coming weeks to take up a coaching role at the TFF Academy in New Jersey, United States. Whilst Ethan will be hugely missed at the club, this is a superb opportunity for one of the game’s brightest young coaches.

Ethan arrived at St Colman’s Park in 2016 from Carrigaline United and took over the club’s u17 set-up. He guided them to the U17 Mark Farren Memorial Shield as well as the semi-final of the U17 FAI Cup. They also only missed out on the end-of-season play-offs on goal difference. Following the conclusion of the 2016 campaign, Ethan and his backroom staff of Colm Bermingham and Len Walker took over the club’s u19 side who are gearing up for the final weeks of their pre-season. Colm and Len will continue to stay involved with this year’s u19s, with the club commencing the process of seeking Ethan’s successor in the coming days.

Initially Ethan has signed a nine month contract with the New Jersey Academy which will last until November. The opportunity may then arise to extend his stay if the spell has been a success for all parties.

U19 Boss Ethan McCarthy

The decision was hugely difficult for Ethan but the former Carrigaline manager is relishing the new opportunity,

“It really was a massive decision for me to make. Last year was my first season coaching at League of Ireland level and we were quite successful. I felt that we could do even more this year. However when this chance arose, I didn’t want to look back with regret and think of what might have been. I actually rejected their first contract offer but they came back with a better one the second time around and I just felt it was right to take it.

I spoke to Stephen Henderson and he backed me to take the offer. He is delighted for me. I’m really looking forward to it and I’ll see how the first nine months goes. The door is always open at Cobh Ramblers for me in the future and I would like to thank the club for everything they have done. As for whoever comes in next, they have two excellent coaches in Colm and Len to work with as well as a brilliant squad of players. I wish the team the best of luck this year.”

Cobh Ramblers FC would like to express our sincere gratitude to Ethan for his time at the club. He clearly has a huge future in management and coaching and we would like to wish him the best of luck during his time in the US.
