U17’s through to Shield Quarter Finals

Cobh Ramblers’ u17 side eased through to the last eight of their Shield Competition with a 7-1 home win over Wexford Youths at St Colman’s Park last Saturday. On the same day that Stephen Henderson’s senior squad made headlines by securing a play-off with Drogheda, Ethan McCarthy’s Young Rams put in a fantastic display to defeat their South Eastern counterparts. Stephen O’Leary scored twice, bringing his tally to 12 for the season while centre back Gordon Walker grabbed another. Mid-season signings Alex Connolly and Conor O’Leary also found the net, as did Matthew Lamb from the penalty spot. The final scorer on 87 minutes was an unusual one. With midfielder Rueben Henry struggling due to injury, substitute goalkeeper Christian Begley was the sole remaining replacement on the bench. A quick change of kit was required for the Douglas netminder as he took his position up front for the Rams. There was more drama to come however as Begley found himself through on goal and produced a fine finish to chip the Wexford goalkeeper. Unsurprisingly, it was his first goal of the season!

They will now face Athlone Town away from home in the quarter-finals after the Midland side defeated Salthill Devon 6-0 in their First Round tie. Details of this clash have yet to be confirmed.
